 Sehyung (Sergey) Kim

was born in 1987 in Almaty (Kazakhstan). He studied composition with Bakir Bayakhunov at the Almaty Music College. From 2007 to 2012 he studied composition with V. G. Agafonnikov at the Tchaikovsky State Conservatory in Moscow and also took lessons with Dmitri Kourliandski (composition) and Yuri Kasparov (instrumentation). He is currently studying at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz (Austria) in the class of Beat Furrer.

He is a laureate of international competitions in the USA (DuoSolo, 2010) and Russia ("Step to the Left", Saint Petersburg, 2012). He participated in the 45th International Summer Courses at Darmstadt (Germany, 2010), the second International Academy for Young Composers in Chaykovsky, Perm Krai (Russia, 2012), the second Kiev Biennale of Contemporary Music (Ukraine, 2013), the third Festival of Young Music "Exposition" (Nizhny Novgorod, 2013), and he earned a scholarship from the eighth International Academy of Contemporary Music "Impuls" in Austria (Graz, 2013). He attended master classes with George Aperghis (France), Brian Ferneyhough (UK), Pierluigi Billone (Italy), Mark Andre (France/Germany), Klaus Lang (Austria), Georg Friedrich Haas (Austria), Dmitri Kourliandski (Russia), and Chaya Czernowin (Israel).

Performers of his music have included the GAM Ensemble, Moscow Contemporary Music Ensemble, Studio of New Music (Moscow), "eNsemble" (Saint Petersburg), Ensemble Nostri Temporis (Ukraine), the "dissonArt" ensemble (Greece), soloists Ivan Bushuev, Vladislav Pesin, Sergej Tchirkov (Russia), Oh Yuha (South Korea), Simone Telandro (Italy), Diego García-Pliego (Spain), and many others.

He has earned commissions from projects and festivals such as "tax free" (Saint Petersburg, 2010), "Live Track" (Moscow, 2010), "Difficulty of Translation" (Moscow, 2010), "Another Space" (Moscow, 2012), "Magister Ludi" (Moscow, 2013), "New Russia – New Europe" (Moscow, 2013), and "Moscow Autumn" (Moscow, 2013).

His music has been performed in many cities in Russia (Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod, Surgut, Yakutsk, Perm, etc.), and also in other countries, such as the USA, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Italy, Kazakhstan, and Ukraine.

In 2010 he was mentioned in the book "Young Russian composers", published by "Kompozitor".

In 2012 he signed a contract with the French publisher BabelScores.

In 2013 was chosen as composer-in-residence with the GAM Ensemble (Moscow).

In September 2013 he was invited by the Kurmangazy Kazakh National Conservatory to read a series of six lectures on the theme "Extended Techniques in Different Instruments".

He has written several articles on contemporary performing arts. Some of his works were published in the "New Music Newspaper" (Kazakhstan).
